There has been a rise in heinous crimes in Dhenkanal district in the past few months with the culprits eluding police. In some cases the accused have been marked untraced after cops failed to identify and arrest them.

DHENKANAL: There has been a rise in heinous crimes in Dhenkanal district in the past few months with the culprits eluding police. In some cases the accused have been marked untraced after cops failed to identify and arrest them.
On December 23, 2010, twin murders rocked Dhenkanal town. Two youths, Kamal Lochan Dalei (23) and Sangram Mohanty (22) were murdered by miscreants on the Dhenkanal autonomous college premises.

Seven armed miscreants killed the duo. Both died on the way to hospitals.
Kamal's father Padmalochan Dalei lodged complaint with Dhenkanal Town police against seven persons. Police said the murder was sequel to last year's college election and love affair between Kamal Lochan and a local girl. A day after the incident, police seized the vehicle and arrested Kishore Dash of Govindpur village. He confessed to his involvement. The rest six are on the run. Dhenkanal police claimed to have have filed chargesheet and issued warrants against the accused.
Another murder rocked the peaceful town on April 25 this year when a gardener of Rana Sponge Iron Limited was killed. The mutiliated body of Raj Kumar Tiwari (40) of UP was found in a water body behind the company's boundry wall within Parjang police limits. His hands were tied and private parts were cut off. Inspector-in-charge of Parjang police station Dukhabandhu Nayak said steps are being taken to arrest the assailants.
But mysterious death of BJD leader and Hindol block panchayat samiti chairman Nabaghana Sahoo has grabbed maximum attention. Though Sahoo died in a hit and run case on May 14, his brother Muralidhar Sahoo alleged that it was a pre-planned political murder and lodged complaints against four persons of the village. Police have arrested one person. Rajya Sabha member Rudra Narayan Pany has demanded a CBI inquiry into it.
On the opther hand, three armed miscreants looted gold jewellery worth Rs.60,000 from a woman near Kantanali Byepass area within Town police limits on the night of May 25.
Some miscreants looted cash and jewellery worth Rs 80,000 from a couple at gun-point near Sorisiapada village on May 26. The incident took place when the couple was going on a motorcycle. SP (Dhenkanal) Gajbhiye Satish Kumar Ishwardas could not be contacted despite attempts.
